Making the Switch: A Guide to Fall-Ready Skin

The season of bronzed skin and sun-kissed freckles is in the rearview. And just as we swap out day dresses for cozy sweaters, the changing weather beckons a switch in our skincare game.

Nature has its rhythms, and our skin — the barrier between us and the world — reacts dynamically to environmental shifts. In the summer, the combination of heat, sweat, and humidity can make our skin oilier, requiring products that are lightweight and sun-protective. The onset of fall introduces cooler, drier air that can strip our skin of its natural moisture. The result? Potential for dryness, flakiness, and a dull complexion.

1. Opt for thicker moisturizers
Let’s start with the most obvious, and possibly the most important step. Especially overnight, you might want to trade in those lightweight lotions for richer creams. As the air becomes drier, your skin needs an added dose of hydration. Look for ingredients like ceramides and natural oils, which not only moisturize but also create a protective barrier to lock in that moisture.

2. Exfoliate, but not too much
The first thing you might be tempted to do when you see some flakiness is scour it off. But we’re here to gently advise you to step away from the scrub. Over-exfoliating can actually strip the skin, so while exfoliation is key, be cautious. Dead skin accumulation can prevent your moisturizers from penetrating deeply. Opt for gentle exfoliants about once a week, ensuring you’re shedding those cells without compromising skin health.

3. Sunscreen is still a must
Don’t be fooled by the cooler temperatures — even as temperatures drop, the sun’s intensity doesn’t. UV rays, the culprits behind hyperpigmentation and fine lines, are present all year round. Keep up with your daily SPF routine, perhaps opting for a moisturizer with built-in broad-spectrum protection.

4. Don’t skip your lips
The lips are often overlooked in skincare routines, but actually need plenty of TLC no matter the season. Their skin is thinner and more delicate, making them susceptible to external aggressors. Fall’s drier, crisper air can be particularly harsh, leaving lips parched and flaky. Start using a hydrating lip balm, preferably with natural butters and oils, to keep chapping at bay.

5. Get caffeinated
As autumn might cause the skin to appear more tired and dull, caffeine acts as a stellar ingredient to combat this. Not only does it stimulate blood circulation, making your skin look more radiant, but it also possesses antioxidant properties that can help fend off environmental damage. The best part? It’s an instant brightener, making your skin look and feel refreshed and awake. So the next time you reach for your coffee, remember your skin might appreciate a dose, too.

6. Retinol reset
Active ingredients aren’t for everyone. However, if you’re a retinol user who gave it a break during the sunnier days because of its photosensitizing properties, fall might be the time to reintroduce it. Retinol can help in cell turnover and boost collagen production. But remember, always start slow.

7. Nourish from within
Just like your parents told you: It’s what’s on the inside that counts. It’s important to remember to keep up with water intake even after the summer months. Hydrated cells lead to plump, vibrant skin and better health all round. You might be sipping warm ciders rather than Aperol Spritz’s during autumn evenings, but don’t neglect good old-fashioned H2O day-to-day.
